We are ruled by our beliefs. What we believe—consciously or not— determines everything about us.

What shows up in every aspect and corner of our lives is a direct result of our individual and collective belief systems working within the environment of an intelligent cosmic consciousness that is itself an evolving testimony to the phenomena of human belief. (1)

Our individual and collective interaction with the greater cosmic consciousness is not the focus of this article, but rather a side note to what I suspect is of even greater significance: that belief itself can be the greatest inhibiting factor to one’s individual evolution within that greater consciousness!
Therein lays the paradox. We cannot function without beliefs, and yet our beliefs are the stuff from which we create the matrix of our individual and collective life experiences—and many of them are not to our liking.

It is not a question of having belief or not, since we apparently cannot function as thinking humans without belief. What apparently is of primary consideration is exactly what we believe and how we attain those beliefs.

Adding to the confusion regarding belief is the growing awareness that single-minded belief is largely responsible for what shows up in our experience. In other words, it is through our belief and structures of belief that we create our own reality. (2)

With the incredible ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity that has been contributing to the rich development of our species over the centuries, it is no surprise that we have widely-divergent beliefs on any topic of choice. But what should be surprising to our evolving levels of conscious awareness is the degree to which a belief in anything tends to inhibit—and generally to prohibit—continued diversity, development, and expansion within that belief as well as the possibility of considering differing lines of thought.

But if focused belief is responsible for creating our reality, how could we at the same time be open for our beliefs to evolve and morph into something different? Wouldn’t that negate the positive creative force of a belief to manifest into our physicality?

Is it possible to have a belief and at the same time provide a mental environment that allows for—or perhaps even encourages—a diversity of belief? Can our consciousness foster both deeply-held beliefs and at the same time make room for evolutionary progression of beliefs?

Being a part of the cosmic consciousness means that our individual experience within that consciousness expands the whole. This is part of the evolutionary expansion of all that is.

The recent spate of movies and books on this subject has gained wide-spread interest in this creative process. What the Bleep Do We Know, The Secret, The Moses Code, and You Can Heal Your Life are but some of the more recent examples. Books by Gregg Braden (The Spontaneous Healing of Belief), Andrew Cohen (EnlightenmentNext.com), Esther Hicks (The Law of Attraction), Bruce Lipton (The Biology of Belief), and Diarmuid O’Murchu (Evolutionary Faith), have been adding fuel to the fire of self-created reality within the recent past.

The summation of these and similar works emphasize the wisdom of the ancients that “What we think about comes about” and “Where the attention goes the energy flows.”

In future posts I will continue this question of our beliefs. Feel free to share your reactions, ideas, and general comments.
